Shopping  in Diggle

Like many villages in the United Kingdom the number of shops in Diggle has dwindled significantly. As recently as 1969 (less than 40 years ago) Diggle had 9 shops: 2 general stores; a greengrocers; fish and chip shop; butchers; Post Office, bakers, hairdressers and newsagents.

In 1969 what was described as the Diggle Planning Group (forerunner of the Community Association today) conducted a survey of Diggle residents. At that time 33% of families did most of their shopping in Diggle. 19% in Uppermill and 48% elsewhere.

Whilst no comparative figures are available today there is no doubt any survey would reveal a substantial change in shopping habits. Today the emphasis is on keeping the one general store-cum-Post Office open. In 1969, 'Many people would like a Chemist in the village followed by a hardware store'.
